January 1, (Daily Scripture)

Isaiah 51:15-52:3
For I am the Lord your God, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—the Lord of hosts is his name.
I have put my words in your mouth, and hidden you in the shadow of my hand, stretching out the heavens
and laying the foundations of the earth, and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’
Rouse yourself, rouse yourself! Stand up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk at the hand of the Lord
the cup of his wrath, who have drunk to the dregs the bowl of staggering. There is no one to guide her
among all the children she has borne; there is no one to take her by the hand among all the children she has brought up. These two things have befallen you—who will grieve with you?—devastation and destruction, famine and sword—who will comfort you? Your children have fainted, they lie at the head of every street like an antelope in a net; they are full of the wrath of the Lord, the rebuke of your God.
Therefore hear this, you who are wounded, who are drunk, but not with wine: Thus says your Sovereign, the Lord, your God who pleads the cause of his people: See, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering; you shall drink no more from the bowl of my wrath. And I will put it into the hand of your tormentors, who have said to you, ‘Bow down, that we may walk on you’; and you have made your back like the ground and like the street for them to walk on.
Let Zion Rejoice
Awake, awake, put on your strength, O Zion! Put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city;
for the uncircumcised and the unclean shall enter you no more. Shake yourself from the dust, rise up,
O captive Jerusalem; loose the bonds from your neck, O captive daughter Zion!
For thus says the Lord: You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.

Hebrews 13:18-25
Pray for us; we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honourably in all things. I urge you all the more to do this, so that I may be restored to you very soon.
Benediction
Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Exhortation and Greetings
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly. I want you to know that our brother Timothy has been set free; and if he comes in time, he will be with me when I see you. Greet all your leaders and all the saints. Those from Italy send you greetings. Grace be with all of you.

Luke 22:24-30
The Dispute about Greatness
A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. But he said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
‘You are those who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
